Architectural and engineering competition for contemporary challenges for future solutions
The Solar Decathlon Innovative House Building and Sustainability Competition, originates from the United States, is going to be held this year in Szentendre, Hungary. In the frame of the competition, university teams from various countries participate in Solar Decathlon, where the goal is to design and construct passive dwellings and houses, based on solar energy, from the initial phase to the realization of the house. This year has the topic of renovation and team koeb of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics have developed a modular home renovation system.
WHO WE ARE?
Koeb is the Solar Decathlon 2019 Project Team of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, founded by architecture students, who were dedicated to apply for the contest and to develop new solutions to the present challenges of architecture, engineering and community integration to give answers for a more sustainable use of solar energy.
Our team in majority consists of students of five Faculties of Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics and Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, completed with instructors, faculty advisors and working professionals.
The koeb’s team presents alternative solutions for the modernization and renewal of the building stock in Hungary, primarily in suburban and rural settlements. In addition to the current state of improvement, energy upgrading, and optimization of functionality can be an effective solution to increase the lifespan of homes, the obsolescence of applied technologies and the rapid reduction of their efficiency and can contribute to improving the comfort and conscious use of energy by the population. Our modular home renovation system includes full-function, add-on housing elements, including a mechanical, bathroom and space expansion module, complete with different facades and a solar roof. Prefabricated modules can be easily attached to existing properties, either to a tentroofed cube house, or better known as a ‘Kádár cube, thus eliminating the difficulty of building for the property owner or customer. The goal of the competition is to implement the prototype of the system described above.
The Competition is about presenting innovative solutions that might contribute to sustainability with economic, environmental and social effects.
The primary purpose of the prototype units of the construction system is to modernize the existing property stock in a sustainable manner, which is currently the most optimal solution for energy efficiency and environmentally conscious material use.
The koeb project examines modernization from an environmental and social point of view. From an environmental point of view, connecting a koeb mechanical module to an existing property will result in an annual positive energy balance thanks to real estate and residents, solar panels, and a high share of green energy, thanks to battery power storage. The energy features are improved by additional passive and active solutions, such as a mass wall or an efficient heat pump system that meets the needs of cooling and heating and hot water. We also carry out a life cycle analysis of every built-in material and system, aiming at the smallest possible ecological footprint.
HOW CAN IT BE INNOVATIVE?
Our architectural concept, which is more than a solar-powered building as it a self-supplying and optimizing construction system from a renewable source of energy, includes several engineering solutions. Operation in a system contributes to several technological and sustainability benefits for creating a sustainable in the suburban and rural areas of Hungary. Some of the engineering solutions to mention: energy consumption and storage coordinated by building automation, supplemented with production forecasting, gabion wall with active ventilation in the interior of the module, solar system integrated in green roof, deciduous green facade for improvement of winter and summer energetics.
The Budapest University of Technology and Economics has developed an innovative, solar-powered system that can respond to sustainable housing issues and to the broad integration of clean, renewable energies in Hungary. The main objectives of the project are to improve the conditions of the Hungarian housing stock in economic, environmental and social terms. In addition to architectural innovations, our team pays special attention to harmonizing the three pillars of sustainability with energy efficiency. This way our project focuses not only on the renewal of a property, but also on building a sustainable energy community, whether it be a street or a network of settlements.
